Brian Petrie Workshop September 2015

Updated: Dec 11, 2018

UDAS MEMBERS HAD A MOST ENTERTAINING WEEKEND WORKSHOP IN SEPTEMBER WITH CARTOONIST BRIAN PETRIE. AFTER SELECTING ONE OF BRIAN'S PAINTINGS AS A STIMULUS, THE GROUP EACH MADE A QUICK SKETCH. THIS SKETCH WAS THEN DRAWN ON TO A BLACK PAINTED CANVAS USING A PENCIL.

BRIAN DEMONSTRATED HIS TECHNIQUE OF PAINTING UP TO HIS PENCIL LINES, LEAVING THE BLACK PAINT TO OUTLINE SHAPES. FOR EVERYONE THIS WAS A NEW WAY OF PAINTING WHICH PROVED EXHILARATING. ON DAY TWO HE SHOWED HOW HE APPROACHED LANDSCAPE USING THE SAME METHOD. HE ALSO INCORPORATED A WEE COMPETITION TO DRAW A CARTOON OF A SCOTTISH POLITICIAN.

EVERYONE THOROUGHLY ENJOYED WORKING WITH BRIAN AND COULDN'T WAIT TO EXPERIMENT FURTHER WITH HIS TECHNIQUE. THE GROUP WAS MOST ENTHUSIASTIC AND ALL EXPRESSED A HOPE THAT BRIAN WILL RETURN AT A FUTURE DATE.

BRIAN HAS RECENTLY STARTED CREATING THREE DIMENSIONAL PIECES USING DRIFTWOOD. HE DEMONSTRATED THE PROCESS OF CREATING THESE QUIRKY MODELS. HE ADMITTED THAT RECENTLY HE HAD GIVEN UP PAINTING TO CONCENTRATE ON THESE PIECES BUT AFTER PAINTING AT THE UDAS WORKSHOP IT HAD FIRED HIS DESIRE TO GET HIS PAINTS OUT AGAIN.
